Data entry jobs are viable career options for a number of people. The category actually includes many different positions that have specific areas of specialization. There are typical employers that hire people to perform data entry. These positions often provide full and part time hour options. They also supply many employees with hourly pay and benefits. Working employer-based data entry jobs often provide more structured paths for advancement as well. In many cases there are teams of data entry workers. Each time may have a lead or supervisor. The supervisors may then have a manager and then each department may have a manager. Then each site may have a manager as well. Depending on the size of the business that you work for there may be multiple regions as well. Many of these businesses like to promote from within the company. This represents a possible chain of advancement that data entry workers can progress through. 

With freelance data entry jobs there are appealing aspects such as the potential to set your own schedule. In most cases you are the boss and you choose when to accept a project. There are often deadline for projects, but you can work when you want and where you want. Likewise there are no benefits supplied, but you may find that if you are motivated you may make more than you would working for an employer doing data entry. 

Regarding advancement there is the possibility of managing your own data entry team of freelance workers. This can actually result in an increase in pay as well. Some freelance workers may establish typical businesses in the future as well. In some cases the freelancer may be taken on as an employee by a service buyer. There are no well-defined paths of advancement though. What you do is up to you and that freedom can prove to be a valuable asset in some hands. 

Setting out knowing what you want can help you to make choices that move you more directly toward those goals. It can also help to simply keep you focused on what you need to do to continue progressing. Many people enjoy a rewarding career in data entry, but they each began at some point.
